Yakovlev Yak-3

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Yakovlev Yak-3 (Russian language: Я́ковлев Як-3) was a World War II Soviet fighter aircraft. Robust and easy to maintain, it was much liked by pilots and ground crew alike.[1] It was one of the smallest and lightest major combat fighters fielded by any combatant during the war, and its high power-to-weight ratio gave it excellent performance.[2] It proved a formidable dogfighter. Marcel Albert, World War II French ace, who flew the Yak in USSR with theNormandie-Niémen Group, considered it a superior aircraft to the P-51D Mustang and theSupermarine Spitfire.[3] After the war ended, it flew with the Yugoslav and Polish Air Forces.[1] More...

The diminutive fighter, nicknamed "Ishak" or "Ishachok" ("Donkey" or "Burro") by Soviet pilots, figured prominently in the Second Sino-Japanese War,[2] the Battle of Khalkhin Gol[2] and the Spanish Civil War[3][4] – where it was called the Rata ("Rat") by the Nationalists or Mosca ("Fly") by the Republicans.
